National Organ Transplant Act
This act, passed by Congress in 1984, safeguards the organ donation system. The Act outlaws the sale or purchase of organs, which keeps the system based on altruism. The law also sets up an organ sharing system to guarantee the fair allocation of organs.

Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN)
Established by the National Organ Transplant Act, OPTN is a unique, public-private partnership that links all professionals involved in the donation and transplantation system.

United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)
This non-profit group operates the OPTN and coordinates the transplantation of organs for donation.

2006 Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA)
Congress adopted new provisions for this act that standardizes the rules for organ procurement from deceased donors in the U-S.
